Hudson Automotive Group
4,300+ workstations migrated to cloud-native Microsoft Entra ID and Intune management with near-zero user disruption.
Hudson Automotive Group modernised its distributed endpoint estate without wiping devices, rebuilding configurations, or disrupting critical dealership operations.
The client
Hudson Automotive Group is an automotive dealership network headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, with sales, service, and administrative operations distributed across multiple locations.
More than 4,300 workstations support customer-facing sales teams, service technicians, administrative staff, and other critical dealership operations. The endpoint estate includes dedicated administrative computers, shared showroom sales terminals, and ruggedised devices used by service technicians.
In this high-transaction environment, continuous access to dealer management software, inventory systems, customer information, and diagnostic tools is essential to keeping the business moving.
The need
Hudson Automotive Group needed to transition more than 4,300 physical workstations from a traditional on-premises Active Directory hybrid-joined model to cloud-native Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft Intune management.
The environment included approximately 3,600 Entra-registered identities and more than 6,300 hybrid records. The scale of the project was significant, but the technical complexity was only part of the challenge.
Many of Hudson's devices were shared by multiple users. Sales terminals and technician devices contained established Windows profiles, local application states, browser configurations, dealer management system shortcuts, OEM diagnostic tool shortcuts, and dealership-specific settings.
A conventional wipe-and-rebuild migration would have removed those configurations and created thousands of individual user-impact events. Rebuilding each device would also have required extensive IT intervention across geographically distributed locations.
Hudson needed a migration strategy that could:
- Preserve existing Windows user profiles and local settings
- Minimise disruption to showroom, service, and administrative operations
- Avoid manually wiping and rebuilding more than 4,300 devices
- Support shared sales and technician endpoints
- Move devices toward cloud-native Entra ID and Intune management
- Create a repeatable endpoint model for future acquisitions and divestitures
Why Hudson Automotive Group chose PowerSyncPro
Hudson Automotive Group selected PowerSyncPro Migration Agent to transform its existing Windows endpoints without treating modernisation as a device replacement exercise.
Migration Agent provided a way to change the identity and management architecture underneath each device while preserving the environment employees already relied upon.
Instead of requiring a wholesale wipe-and-rebuild project, PowerSyncPro enabled Hudson to re-permission existing Windows profiles and associate them with target Entra ID credentials. This approach allowed primary users to return to familiar workspaces with their profiles, data, desktop configurations, and local settings intact.
Migration Agent could also be deployed silently through Hudson's existing endpoint tooling. Devices could be prepared in the background and transitioned through a scheduled, phased migration process, giving the IT team greater control over the rollout.
Modernise the endpoint without forcing the user to start over
PowerSyncPro Migration Agent helped Hudson change the identity and management architecture while preserving the endpoint experience employees depended on.
The solution
Hudson Automotive Group used PowerSyncPro Migration Agent to transition existing Windows endpoints from legacy domain-joined and hybrid-joined configurations into a cloud-native Microsoft Entra ID and Intune environment.
Preserving profiles in place
Migration Agent re-permissioned existing Windows user profiles and associated them with target Entra ID credentials. Primary users could sign in with their new cloud identities while retaining their familiar desktop environments, local data, application settings, browser configurations, and business-critical shortcuts.
This was particularly important for Hudson's shared sales terminals and technician devices, where recreating established configurations would have increased migration effort and operational risk.
Orchestrating the migration at scale
Migration Agent was deployed silently using Hudson's existing endpoint tooling. Devices could be prepared in the background and transitioned through scheduled, phased cutovers.
This gave the IT team a controlled way to migrate thousands of endpoints without creating dealership-wide bottlenecks or requiring extensive desk-side intervention.
Moving directly toward modern management
Migrated endpoints transitioned toward native Microsoft Intune management and Windows Autopilot readiness. Hudson could reduce its dependence on legacy on-premises directory infrastructure while creating a more standardised approach to endpoint lifecycle management.
The project was not simply a domain migration. It established a cloud-first endpoint foundation designed to support Hudson's current operations and future growth.
The PowerSyncPro approach
Preserve. Maintain the user experience and existing Windows profiles.
Orchestrate. Prepare devices silently and execute controlled, phased cutovers.
Modernise. Move the endpoint estate toward native Entra ID and Intune management.
The results
Hudson Automotive Group successfully migrated more than 4,300 workstations while maintaining near-zero user disruption.
Employees transitioned to Entra ID authentication while retaining the familiar environments they relied upon for daily dealership operations. Desktop layouts, local data, browser configurations, dealer management system shortcuts, and other important settings remained available after the transition.
Complex shared endpoints, including showroom sales terminals and technician devices, were migrated while preserving primary profile integrity. This helped Hudson avoid thousands of manual device rebuilds and desk-side IT visits.
By moving endpoints toward cloud-native Entra ID and centralised Intune management, Hudson also established a more scalable model for managing devices across existing and future locations.
The modernisation created a repeatable framework for future acquisitions and divestitures. Rather than extending legacy infrastructure into newly acquired dealerships, Hudson can apply a cloud-first endpoint approach designed to help reduce location onboarding timelines by weeks.
- More than 4,300 Windows workstations migrated
- Near-zero disruption to dealership employees and operations
- Primary Windows profiles and local settings preserved
- Shared sales and technician endpoints migrated without large-scale rebuilds
- Reduced need for manual desk-side IT intervention
- Endpoints moved toward native Microsoft Entra ID and Intune management
- Windows Autopilot-ready endpoint foundation established
- Repeatable migration model created for future acquisitions and divestitures
- Potential to reduce newly acquired dealership onboarding timelines by weeks
Why PowerSyncPro
Large endpoint migrations are rarely difficult because of the destination. The risk lies in everything that can be disrupted along the way.
PowerSyncPro Migration Agent helps organisations modernise Windows endpoint identity and management without forcing every device and every user to start over.
For Hudson Automotive Group, that meant preserving user productivity, minimising migration friction, protecting its existing endpoint investment, accelerating cloud adoption, and creating a repeatable technology foundation for continued growth.
Migrate the identity. Preserve the experience.
Modern management does not have to mean choosing between transformation and disruption.
Modernise your endpoints without starting over.
